1Jesus, engrave it on my heart
That thou hast died for me,
A deed from all things parted be,
But never, never, Lord, from thee.

2Needful is thy chastening rod,
To reconcile my soul to God;
Needful is the fiery trial,
Needful thy all-prevailing prayer.

3Needful thy presence, dearest Lord,
Thy peace and comfort to afford;
Needful thy promise, to impart
Fresh life and vigor to my heart.

4Needful art thou, my Guide, my Stay,
Through all life's dark and weary way;
Nor will at last less needful be,
To bring me home to heaven and thee.
