DARK brood the heavens over thee
DARK brood the heavens over thee! Black clouds of gloom are gathering fast! In vain the lightnings of the free— Thy days of sin and mirth are past.
Dark brood the heavens over thee! Red moons of death are warring round; Bright lightnings dash from sea to sea— How shakes the heaving, broken ground!
Dark brood the heavens over thee! Behold, the Judge of all appears; Unrobed in matchless majesty, Raised from the buried dust of years.
Dark brood the heavens over thee! Sinner, behold thy dreadful doom: Destruction opens wide for thee— Thy blindly chosen, final home.
Yet stay—the vision lingers yet; Why, sinner, oh! why wilt thou die? Dark brood the heavens, but mercy waits; This hour to Christ, thy Saviour, fly.
